1. Aim for Symmetry.

The key to a great layout is symmetry. You don't want the room to feel heavy-ended or lop-sided. Instead of crowding all the furniture or accent pieces at one end, aim for a layout that's balanced and even.

That feeling of symmetry also applies to color. If you've got a dark and heavy piece of furniture weighing down one side of the room, try to brighten it up with a cheerful accent pillow or a lively lamp.

2. Create Focal Points.

Accent your best pieces and make a room pop by giving it a focal point. A great focal point could be as simple as a painting above the fireplace or a bright and comfy chair.

Instead of making your television the focal point of your living room, turn the focus toward your beautiful coffee table with an eye-catching bowl or center-piece. Also, remember that while you shouldn't overload on focal points because you don't want the room to appear too busy, you can have more than one. Aim for two to three attention-grabbing focal points in any large room.

3. Optimize Your Space.

Try to choose a layout that gives a feeling of space and openness. Instead of blocking off your living room by parking a couch in front of the entrance, arrange the furniture so the room has flow.

Also, pulling the furniture away from the walls can actually create the illusion of more space. It may seem contradictory, but this simple maneuver gives the room space to "breathe," and creates the general appearance of space.

4. Make it Functional.

No matter how great it looks, a furniture layout is not going to work if you're constantly tripping over the end table or have to get up and cross the room every time you need something from the coffee table.
