Furniture Layout Tips to Make a Living Room Look Bigger

Did you know that how you lay out furniture in a living room can go a long way towards determining the apparent size of the room in question? To believe this, you just have to visit one of the living rooms where faulty furniture layout is in place; and where, as a result of it, the rooms end up looking small and cramped. Sometimes, it is not necessarily that that said rooms are particularly small. Neither is it that the furniture items in the rooms are particularly large. But it is simply the way the furniture is laid out that can lead to the room looking small and cramped. On the other hand, we have situations where people, through intelligent furniture layout, have been known to make rooms that were indeed very small to look large and comfortable. This is where a person with what is, objectively speaking, a very small house, ends up getting comments as to 'how big' their house is, simply because of the way they lay out the furniture therein. Worth remembering at this point is that a person's perception is usually their reality. Therefore if your living room looks big to them (simply on account of how you have arranged the furniture therein), they won't believe that that the house 'looks large' - but rather than the room is 'actually large.'

All that, then, brings us to the question as to how to lay out furniture in a living room, in order to make it look bigger. Now the first step towards laying out a living room to make it look bigger is that of planning. Ideally, you should get the layout right on paper; before attempting to get it right in the physical room.

When it comes to the actual layout, using versatile (multi-functional) furniture can help you to save on space, and effectively make the room look larger. Remember, it is not only the size of furniture in a room that can make it look small but also the number of separate furniture items 'crammed' into the room. So in as much as you have versatile pieces of furniture, you reduce the number of separate items in the room, and thereby make it look bigger. This you do without compromising on the comfort of the room's users, as the few versatile items end up doing what the numerous separate items would have ended up doing).

Putting the bigger furnishings right against the wall, so that the space towards the center is 'uninterrupted' is another step you can take towards making your living room look bigger. You just have to see the difference in perception this single step can make in order for you to believe it.

Painting the walls of the living room, so that their color merges with that of (at least some of) the main furniture pieces can also go a long way towards creating an amazingly believable illusion of bigness of space, while in fact the living room may only be a tiny crib.

If you want to create an illusion of bigness with regard to your living room, you would be well advised to consider placing the furniture that you decide to put in the space towards the center of the room at angles. Not only does this create an illusion of space, but it also makes the whole scheme look less rigid to the eye.
